It is one of the best weeks of the year where the game of golf heads down to the best atmosphere in golf. That would be Augusta, Georgia for the Master’s. The first major of the year for the best known trophy in golf: The Green Jacket.
Augusta National was designed by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones starting in 1931, and the first Masters—called the “Augusta National Invitation Tournament”—was played in 1934. The Masters has had many notable moments since it began including:
· The first Green Jacket was awarded in 1949 to Sam Snead
· Jack Nicklaus has the most wins at the tournament with 6 wins over a 22 year span.
· The Masters has been played since 1934 including a 3 year break due to World War 2. There have only been 35 different winners over that span.
· The oldest winner of the Masters was Jack Nicklaus at 46 years old, and the youngest player was Tiger Woods at the age of 21, who has also posted the lowest score recorded at The Masters.
Over the last few years there has been a lot of young talent playing in the Masters and they always have about 6 Amateurs playing in the tournament as well every year. Some of the big names that will be in the hunt this year will be players like Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Speith, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. For my prediction I really hope that Tiger Woods wins the tournament again, it would be huge for the game of golf, but I am also rooting for Jordan Speith and Justin Thomas since they have been so good in the last few years.
The tournament kicked off this Wednesday April 4th with the Annual Par 3 contest which is always great to watch with some famous players playing with their kids and just having fun before the real tournament starts Thursday morning. At Fellows Creek we will be hosting our own Par 3 tournament next Friday April 13th at 5:30 PM, you can call the pro shop or go on our website with more information.
